Types of Foundations Guide

Hi everyone

Foundation is a staple is every girl’s beauty routine. One of the most overwhelming tasks for all of us is to pick the right foundation. There are just too many on the market and so I decided to hopefully help you all out and give some pointers which you will find useful when your trying to pick a foundation.

This post is going to be divided into two parts : types of foundation and picking the right shade (here)

There are three most prominent types of foundation: Powder, Liquid and Creme.

Powder/Mineral

A powder foundation is very beginner friendly and also the foundation most of us start with. It is easy to use and provides light to medium coverage. It works best for people with oily to combination skin. For dry skin people like me it can extenuate your dry patches, so it is essential to use a good moisture under your foundation. Personally I am not a huge fan of powder foundations and I tend to gravitate more towards liquids because I like more coverage than what a powder foundation provides. That being said I too started with a powder foundation. Here are my top personal top picks for powder foundations

Drugstore – L’oreal True Match and Maybelline Fit Me

High End – Mac Studio Fix Powder plus Foundation (This is one of my friend’s holy grail product for combination skin)

Next up is Liquids

Liquid

These are my personal favorite and I think they are the most popular kind out there. They provide light to full coverage. They give a matte or dewy finish. For people with oily skin it is best to use a mattifying primer and then set the foundation with powder. For dry skin people I highly recommend moisturing so that the foundation does stick to any dry patches.  Another trick for dry skin people is to mix in some face oil with the foundation to give a more dewy look (that’s my secret—for all those who have commented on how glowy and healthy my skin looks :P. I mix Josie Maran Argan oil)

Here are my top personal top picks for liquid foundations (I have tried to keep the list concise even though there are tonnes of fabulous products on the market)

Drugstore

  • Dry-normal skin – L’oreal true match lumi (full review here)
  • All skin types – L’oreal Pro matte infalliable (full review here) or Maybelline fit me for normal to oily

Highend – this is hard to pick there are so many good more out there.

  • Light to Medium Coverage – Makeup Forever Ultra HD foundation (full review here)
  • Medium to Full Coverage – Estee Lauder Double Wear
  • Dry – Combination Skin – Makeup Forever Ultra HD, Nars Sheer Glow
  • Oily- Combination Skin – Marc Jacobs Remarcable

And finally there are cream foundations

Cream

These foundations generally come in a pot or a stick. Mostly used by makeup artists, if you have seem their foundation/concealer palette you know what I am talking about. Cream foundations are very build able and give full coverage in general but with a damp sponge it is possible to get a more sheer application. Cream foundations are best suited for people with normal, combination to dry skin types. If you tend to get oily, it is highly recommended to set it with powder.

Here are my top personal top picks for cream foundations.

Drugstore

  • I haven’t tried any at the drug store, so can’t really say I have a favourite (Sorry!)

Highend

  • Cover|FX – Total Cover Cream Foundation
  • Makeup Forever Ultra HD stick

That is all the different kinds of foundation (well almost!)

Hope you found that useful and I was able to help you narrow down which foundation type you would like to try. Next it’s time to find your shade.

Watch out for my next post where I will talk all about how to pick your right shade

I haven’t talked about BB creams, CC creams and tinted moistures in this post because that would make it too complicated. Lol!!! If your interested in knowing the difference what some of my recommendations are let me know in the comments below.

Thanks for reading guys!! Please leave a comment below telling me what your holy grail foundation is, along with your skin type. I would love to hear fro you 🙂
